So I'm writing a story called Humorless, about... umm... an extra-dimensional horror invasion of an otherwise fairly harmless and amusing Victorian fantasy/clockpunk world. It has zeppelins (such as the story's namesake) and sentient clockwork houses and the very worst examples of humanity (professional adventurers).
Anyway, I was reading an essay from Bruce Sterling about Steampunk today, and in it, he talks a bit about what the point of steampunk is -- grabbing or inventing this tech-that-never-was and using it as a way to reflect the technology in our own lives that we already subconsciously know is outdated and obsolete -- insufficient to the needs of the evolving, green world that our children will need to live in.
I thought it was kind of neat, even though I'd never ever ever though of steampunk/clockpunk in those terms -- I just like zeppelins and Girl Genius.
Then I got to thinking about Humorless... and the clockpunk tech I've put in the story... and I realized that that is exactly what I'm doing with every single piece of technology I include in the story.
It's kinda creepy, actually.
I write more about it
over at my blog.
How about y'all? Any strange things crept in while you weren't looking?
