Murlocs Gone Wild

With the fun addition of having much of my novel inspired/supplemented by my photography from October, I'll be putting a lot of pictures up to help show you where the ideas and imagery came from. In exploring how to do this on World of Wordcraft, I discovered a place to put music as well. Since a couple of my music interests may be a bit obscure, I thought I'd share a couple samplings. Two are from DJ Earworm, and two are from OC Remixes. I have a thing for blended genres and musical styles.

I've included links to the sources of these mp3's, but I'm curious to know what you other writers think about them, and to hear more about what kind of music gets to you.

I tend to think of the music that I listen to as I write as the soundtrack to the story. Consequently, many of my stories read like a musical written by Manowar, Dream Theater and Five Finger Death Punch.

It depends on the mood of both what I'm writing and of myself. I do tend to start out with Loreena McKennitt, however, along with Mark Knopfler. KT Tunstall is often somewhere high up there as well, along with Bonnie Raitt... Oh, and Karan Casey.

Nothing too catchy/distracting, but enough that I can work to it and get inspiration from them.

My iPod is nearly always with me, and it is generally on. Geeze, I've got a lot of music on it...

Oh, and y'all need to expand your classical music from the Looney Toons playlist. :)

I cannot write with music. Especially music with words: it distracts me too much. I've had more success with classical music (not opera -- again, words) but still I prefer a quiet spot rather than any noise at all.

My iPod Shuffle is ALWAYS going while I'm at work, except when the battery is dead. I've got arranging it down to an art, so that all the outside world sees is the white earbud and cord, very discreet, and it follows me all around the building.

I tend to listen to alternative rock. Stuff like The Killers, Keane and The Fray. I have tired to break it up into playlists, but it takes more effort than it is worth. For me, often the music becomes background noise. If I am writing a specific scene that requires some sort of music I find myself skipping tracks until I find the one that fits.

Much like how doodling helps break the whiteness of the page, music helps break up the "fear factor" I may have with a project. Hell, a montage is nothing without music!

I often have to have music going at all times regardless if I am at work, playing WoW or writing.

Haha! I've noticed that, too, with most classical pieces. I can actually picture what Elmer Fudd is doing when listening to it.

For writing, I like music that is repetitive, has no words, and that I am not sickeningly familiar with. On iTunes, there's a series of "Music For..." that I'm thinking about piecing a playlist together from. Music for Creativity, Music for Productivity, that sort of thing.

Most of the "classical" music I can find has been drilled into my head from Loony Tunes, and I just can't listen to them and concentrate on what I'm writing.
